Prenatal & Maternal Health

Prenatal and maternal nutrient status directly influences fetal development, pregnancy outcomes, and long-term health for both mother and baby. This collection groups the blood tests most associated with healthy pregnancy planning, prenatal care, and postpartum recovery — all using simple at-home dried blood spot kits.

The biomarkers that matter most in pregnancy

  • DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) — Critical for fetal brain and retinal development from the second trimester onward. Most pregnancy supplements provide less than the WHO-recommended 200 mg/day, and serum levels are often below optimal even in supplemented mothers.
  • 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] — Maternal vitamin D status affects fetal skeletal development, immune programming, and pregnancy outcomes including preeclampsia risk. Deficiency is common, particularly in winter or in women with limited sun exposure.
  • Vitamin A — Essential for fetal growth, organ development, and maternal immune function. Both deficiency and excess matter in pregnancy, making testing more useful than guessing.
  • Homocysteine — A marker of B-vitamin status (folate, B12, B6) and methylation capacity. Elevated homocysteine in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of preeclampsia, miscarriage, and neural tube defects.

When to test

The ideal time to start testing is pre-conception — at least 3 months before trying for pregnancy — because nutrient status takes weeks to shift in response to dietary changes. Retesting during early pregnancy and again postpartum provides the clearest picture of nutritional adequacy through each stage.

All tests use a finger-prick dried blood spot card (no venous draw) and are analysed using clinical-grade methods (LC-MS/MS for vitamin D and homocysteine, gas chromatography for DHA). Results return in 3–5 business days with pregnancy-specific reference ranges where applicable.

Tests are for informational purposes. Always discuss results with your healthcare provider when making clinical decisions during pregnancy.
